SEWER RATE INCREASE OF $3.46 PER SPARKS RESIDENTIAL UNIT PER QUARTER EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2010
On January 1, 2010, Sparks sewer users will see a $3.46 increase in their sewer bills.  The effective rate on January 1, 2010 will be $81.10 per residential unit per quarter, up from $77.64 per residential unit per quarter in 2009.  This is part of the rate increase approved by the City Council February 25, 2008 and implemented April 1, 2008.  The rate increase was phased in over a period of five years to minimize the impact on ratepayers.

VOLUNTEERS REMOVE TRASH FROM WEDEKIND REGIONAL PARK
Sparks, NV - More than 80 volunteers gathered on Oct. 18 to take part in a cleanup event at Wedekind Regional Park hosted by the Great Basin Brewery, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and the City of Sparks. Through the volunteers' combined efforts, 6,000 pounds of trash was removed from the park.

CITY COUNCIL AFFIRMS RESOLUTION OPPOSING REGIONAL GOVERNMENT CONSOLIDATION
Today, the Sparks City Council took the first step to formally oppose regional government consolidation.  While the City Council will join regional efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of city services for the citizens of Sparks, the council does not view changing the government of Sparks and consolidating critical public services as providing any long-term fiscal savings for Sparks residents, or improving the services provided.  The vote was unanimous against regional consolidation at this time.

SPARKS PREVAILS IN LAZY 8 LAWSUITS
The Nevada Supreme Court has rejected the appeals brought by the Sparks Nugget (and a handful of residents) challenging the Sparks City Council's decision to settle a lawsuit and allow the Lazy 8 Hotel/Casino project to move forward in the Spanish Springs area.  The justices were unanimous on their decision, with one abstention.

SPARKS FISCAL YEAR 2009 – 2010 BUDGET CLEARS CITY COUNCIL
The Sparks City Council unanimously approved $97.7 million for governmental operations in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2009-2010 budget.  This represents the expected cost of operations, capital projects, and debt service.  The general fund portion of this budget, which is used to fund government operations, is $56 million, a decrease of 4.6 percent over FY 2008-2009.

SPARKS FIREFIGHTERS AGREE TO WAGE REDUCTIONS TO MEET CITY’S BUDGET RECOMMENDATIONS
Sparks Firefighters IAFF Local 1265 have agreed to forgo a 4.2 percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) to meet budget reduction goals for the city's fiscal year (FY) 2009-2010 budget.  The city must reduce the FY 09-10 budget by $1.7 million from the previous fiscal year.  The City Manager has requested all the city's bargaining groups agree to wage concessions.

Pyramid Way Water and Gas Main Replacement - TMWA informs community of possible delays
In advance of the Nevada Department of Transportation's (NDOT) planned Pyramid Way road reconstruction this summer, Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) will be replacing a water main on Pyramid Way from C Street to York Way. Construction is scheduled to occur from March 30 through May 31, 2009.  Motorists should anticipate reduced traffic speeds and delays during this period, along with occasional re-routing of traffic on Pyramid Way to side streets.
