City Of Sparks

Recreation Programs & Classes

May 16 2015

Children, families, teachers, cities, and towns across the country are gearing up for this year’s Kids to Parks Day, a nation-wide day of outdoor play organized by National Park Trust in cooperation with a host of collaborators. This year’s Kids to Parks Day will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015, a week before the official start of summer. National Park Trust estimates more than 500,000 people will take part in what is rapidly becoming America’s national day of play.

The Kids to Parks Day campaign inspires kids and families to get outdoors and visit parks in order to:

·         Encourage children to lead a more active lifestyle

·         Broaden children’s appreciation for nature and the outdoors

·         Introduce a new generation to our nation's parks by exploring their own neighborhood parks

There are nearly 60 parks to explore in the City of Sparks alone. Close to 30 of these sites are nestled in neighborhoods, giving residents the opportunity to walk or bike to a nearby park. These parks provide playgrounds, basketball courts, pathways, picnic tables with shelters, and open turf areas for children and adults to play, gather, and socialize. There are also two sprawling parks located outside of local neighborhoods – Wedekind Regional Park with 274 acres of open space and six miles of trails, and Golden Eagle Regional Park with a state-of-the-art sports complex spanning 140 acres. Click here to view a complete list of City of Sparks parks.

Families can pledge to participate in Kids to Parks Day by heading to the national website kidstoparks.org. When you register you'll be entered to win a Nikon COOLPIX L830 camera!

The City of Sparks would also love to hear from you on which park(s) you choose to visit that day. We’ll be posting residents’ park visits online at cityofsparks.us. Please send us an email and/or photo at recinfo@cityofsparks.us

We urge you to make time on May 16 to take the children in your lives to a park for Kids to Parks Day!
