Youth ages 8 to 17 can discover the Joy of Painting® by Bob Ross certified instructor Shawna Burkhart. In this fun–filled one-day class designed for beginners, your child will complete an entire wet–on–wet oil painting in just one session. Cost is $46 or $38 for residents of Sparks. Sparks, NV – Enjoy the benefits of yoga this winter. Six-week sessions taught by instructors from Yoga Loka studio will be held at the Larry D. Johnson Community Center at 1200 12th Street, across from the Sparks Library. 

Yoga Flow:  Appropriate for all levels, the class includes a flowing sequence of postures along with detailed instruction. Thursdays, February 23 to March 29 from 5:30 pm. to 6:45 p.m. 

A yoga mat, block and strap are required. The cost per session for adults is $97 or $81 for residents of Sparks.

Yoga Basics:  The introductory course covers the principles, philosophy, movements, breathing and relaxation techniques of yoga. Tuesdays, February 21 to March 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

A yoga mat, block and strap are required. The cost per session for adults is $97 or $81 for residents of Sparks.

The City of Sparks brings a fresh new twist to the adult recreational sports scene by offering kickball, just like popular schoolyard game. Registration to join the spring league runs through March 1 at the Alf Sorensen Community Center, 1400 Baring Blvd. The popular program is geared for adults who want to socialize and be active without the competition required of a sport like softball or basketball. 

Teams consist of 10 players and are open to both men and women, ages 18 and older. The ten-game schedule with double headers will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays, March 5 through April 2, at the Sports Complex at Golden Eagle Regional Park. The cost is $350 per team.

Yoga for Teens:  All levels are welcome in this new class for ages 13 to 18. Participants have a safe, secure and fun place to move their bodies, breathe in life and sit with calmness. Tuesdays, January 10 to February 14 from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

A yoga mat, block and strap are required. The cost per session for adults is $97 or $81 for residents of Sparks. The rate for teens is $86 or $72 for Sparks residents. Scholarship assistance with registration fees is available for eligible participants.

Curb your dog's bad habits and establish good conduct through a six-week obedience class taught by professional dog trainer, Guy Yeaman. Participants will learn how to teach their pet to sit, stand, stay, heel and master other commands.

Classes are held Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Gymnasium, 98 Richards Way. There is still time to join the session which runs through Jan. 23 or pre-register for the next session which begins Jan. 30. Cost per session is $98 ($82 for residents of Sparks). 

Current shot records (rabies, parvo, distemper), training collar, and fabric or leather leash required.

Firm up in a fun way after the holidays by taking part in the City of Sparks winter volleyball league. The seven-week coed program will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, January 7 through February 25 at the Alf Sorensen Community Center, 1400 Baring Blvd. 

The non-spiking program is open to everyone 18 years and older. A tournament will be held at the end of the season. The cost is $95 per team. Players looking for a team can call 353-2385 to be placed on an interest list.

THE MOMTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: HOW TO TAKE AMAZING PHOTOS OF YOUR KIDS WITH YOUR DSLR CAMERA
Dates/Location: Thursdays, January 12 through February 2, from 6 p.m .to 8 p.m. at JLM Creative Photography Studio, 120 Thoma St., Suite 1 in Reno. This course for ages 18 and older will cover the basics of using a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera. Some of the topics covered will be Shooting on Manual, Nailing Focus, Catching Priceless Moments. Weekly projects and Live Shooting exercise included during the final class. The course is designed for Mothers (and Fathers) who own a Digital SLR camera but have not really learned how to use it, or who want to become more proficient in using their camera. Get Paid to Talk - An Introduction to Professional Voice Over. From audio books and animation to documentaries, video games and commercials, learn about the growing field of voice overs! Learn what the pros look for and where to find work in your area. We'll discuss industry pros and cons and play samples from working voice actors. Also, you'll record a short professional script under the direction of a teacher. This class is a lot of fun, realistic, and a great first step for anyone interested in the voice over field. The workshop scheduled for January 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. is presented by the City of Sparks Parks and Recreation Department with Voice Coaches.
