Arraignments are the initial court appearance of the defendant who is then advised of his/her constitutional rights and advised of the alleged charge(s). The defendant is afforded an opportunity to enter a plea of “guilty”, “not guilty” or “no contest”.
If the defendant enters a plea of “guilty” or “no contest” the judge will immediately impose sentence.
If the defendant enters a plea of “not guilty”, the defendant will immediately be given a trial date.
An Assistant City Attorney is present at all arraignment sessions and is available for the defendants to speak to and attempt to resolve their charges without having to exercise their right to trial, if they so choose.
Check-in for arraignments is between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Defendants should check in with the clerks at the main counter.
