For the past five years, internationally recognized personal trainer Troy Fontana has been hosting local fitness boot camps. Now, for the first time ever, they’re being offered year-round at the Alf Sorensen Community Center.
Tone Body Boot Camp is a great jumpstart to people’s fitness regimes. A typical hour-long session starts with a movement-based warm-up, moves into body weight exercises, then finishes off with a team activity and a group discussion of fitness tips. Often an obstacle course is also incorporated into the session.
“It’s different than being stuck in a gym,” Fontana says. “It’s engaging because we strive for mental stimulation as well as physical stimulation.”
What’s more, boot camp produces results. Someone taking full advantage of the program could expect to lose 2 to 4 pounds per week and 2 to 4 percent of their body fat per month. “More importantly,” Fontana adds, “people experience increased energy, confidence and motivation.”
Local resident Pete Kozell participated in Fontana’s program and lost a total of 75 pounds. He has since completed three triathlons and undergone a complete lifestyle change. Others have come to the boot camps seeking to lose weight for upcoming weddings or other special events, and many have come simply looking for a way to reconnect with fitness after long periods of inactivity.
Tone Body Boot Camp runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-7:30a.m. at Alf Sorensen Community Center, 1400 Baring Boulevard. For residents of Sparks, the rate is $99 per month (for a 3 month commitment), and the pay-as-you-go monthly membership is $129. For non-residents, the rate is $119 per month (for a 3 month commitment), and the pay-as-you-go monthly membership is $155. The drop in rate for residents/non-residents is $25.
Fontana wants people to feel welcome, comfortable and encouraged. “A healthy lifestyle is possible,” he says, “and this is a fun way to start.”
